Onirico is a split album featuring a curated selection of tracks by two longstanding producers from the Italian melodic IDM scene: Hypnosis & Coffee “Vincenzo Pacilli” and Seven Nights Alone “Cesare Bignotti”. Hypnosis & Coffee (an alias of Vincent Steiner, with Mario Zweiner, Dungeon Druid, Quasar Explorer, Oregon Vortex, among its key figures) boasts an extensive official and unreleased discography. Under the name Rats, he released music on Wandering Eye, the label run by Panoram. Seven Nights Alone (an alias of Useless Idea) has released works on cult labels such as the Belgian WeMe and the Canadian Suction Records. With the same approach, he has released music in different genres under other names such as: Dual, Nathan Meyem, Aliasing, 7NA, USE, Skinny Guy, Badstep, and Another Name.

In addition to their prolific output and their ability to release music under different aliases, what brings these two producers together is a long-standing virtual friendship that began online, along with shared interests that go beyond music, including esotericism, art, film, and science fiction literature.

The album presents itself as a soundtrack-like sequence of alternating tracks. It does not follow the typical split format divided into two separate sections; instead, the tracks flow one into another. Although each artist has a clearly defined sonic identity, the pieces blur into a unified sound that takes shape as a single listening experience. The record thus unfolds as an imaginative, cinematic soundtrack. In terms of genre, the album expresses a passion for a particular sound characterized by downtempo rhythms, instrumental hip-hop, and ambient melodies, along with a fascination for lo-fi textures, cassette and vinyl hiss, and a natural inclination toward uncovering hidden details buried in the dust.

Hypnosis & Coffee has been recognized since his early releases on EVES for his psychedelic ambient sound, with hints of post-jazz reminiscent of artists such as Sun Ra. He is also known for the many artistic monikers featured on his Bandcamp profile (zweiner.bandcamp.com), where instrumental sampling and references drawn from vintage films enrich his deep knowledge of and influence within the genre. With a similarly outsider attitude, Seven Nights Alone approaches downtempo, the style is marked by influences from 1970s New Age culture as well as post-rock. The project, still largely unreleased, made its debut on Canada’s Suction Records in 2022. His sound is a multilayered blend of subgenres yet to be fully defined. It originated as an archival folder where tracks sharing a similar attitude were catalogued; many of these pieces stem from recording sessions conducted across different years and formats, most of them sourced from old cassette tapes.

Despite their differences, both productions are bound together by similar atmospheres that carry a dreamlike quality, that unfold within a warm sonic landscape of ambient melodies and hip-hop rhythms, revealing a dreamy gaze cast upon a world that seems increasingly cold and gray.
